Aikido is a Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba O-sensei, a master of jujutsu, kenjutsu, jojutsu, and other traditional weapons arts.
Aikido is a comprehensive martial art that encompasses a wide range of training elements. Its primary components include taijutsu (unarmed empty-hand techniques) and bukijutsu (weapons techniques), specifically kenjutsu (sword techniques) and jojutsu (staff techniques).
Aikido is unique among martial arts in that its most distinctive characteristic is the ability to utilize an opponent’s energy and momentum rather than relying solely on one’s own strength and physical power. As a result, physical contact is relatively minimal, allowing not only young and physically strong practitioners, but also women and senior practitioners, to practice techniques effectively and safely with partners of greater physical strength.
Aikido training also emphasizes whole-body movement and includes the practice of ukemi (receiving throws), making it an excellent discipline for maintaining physical health, balance, and flexibility.
We welcome all adults of any age.
